Volunteer Management Group of Edmonton (VMG) s a membership made up of professionals who engage, inspire and manage volunteers in metro Edmonton and beyond.
Meetings are held 8 times per year and include: guest speaker presentations and Conversation Cafe's (facilitated discussions) on a variety of relevant topics in the area of volunteer engagement and best practices in volunteer management. There are also meetings dedicated to networking opportunities because VMG knows that there is a lot of knowledge and wisdom within our own membership!
New and Bold Changes Coming for VMG! The Board of Directors are working collaboratively with other community partners to see how we can avoid duplication, bring relevant content to our members and in general, be of better service to volunteer managers and the volunteerism as a whole.

VMG Call for Board Members!
We've never been a big Board but lately, we've gotten smaller. There are only 4 active Board Members who are working hard to make VMG the best it can be. We are up for the task, but frankly we can use more help. We'd love some fresh perspectives, ideas, and manpower.
The Board meetings are held once per month (with the exception of summer months) and are held downtown from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM/6:30 PM. We have efficient meetings and get along well together. (Have you ever served on a Board or committee where that's not the case? If so, you'll know why this is listed as a plus!).
We are looking for people who are committed to attend the meetings AND to follow through on tasks. A sense of humour helps too. Or not. Either way, we are looking for volunteer managers, or anyone who engages, works or volunteers with volunteers, or has a strong interest in volunteerism and the non-profit sector. The following positions are vacant:
Commitment required of every Board member
Attend all Board, assigned committee and annual general meetings.
Subscribe fully to the mission and activities of the organization.
Attend Member’s Meetings.
Prepare for meetings and participate in the discussion and decisions.
Support the decisions of the Board in public.
Speak for the Board only when sanctioned to do so.
Act only as a full Board - not unilaterally.
Play an active role in identifying potential Board members.
Support any fundraising endeavours of the VMG.
The Board meets a minimum of 10 times in a calendar year for approximately 1.5 hours. Member’s Meetings are held 7 times per year for approximately 3 hours.
PROGRAM DIRECTOR: Duties and Responsibilities
Presents ideas for Member’s Meeting topics to Board.
Arranges for guest speakers, presenters, etc.
Liaises with guest speakers and presenters (collects bios ahead of time, etc.)
Together with the Board, plans the agenda for Member’s Meetings.
Submits information to the Communications Director for inclusion in the monthly newsletter and on the website.
Arranges for thank-you gifts, and cards for presenters.
Time commitment annually: Board meetings (15 hours) + Member’s Meetings (21 hours) + planning Members Meetings (approx. 11 hours) for a total of 47 hours. Time commitment monthly: Approximately 4 hours per month (on average)
SECRETARY: Duties and Responsibilities
Keeps records of the Board, including agendas, minutes, reports, correspondence and newsletters.
Distributes minutes, agendas and committee reports to Board members minimum one week prior to Board meetings.
Maintains the records and archives of the VMG.
Maintains annual registration of the VMG under the societies act.
Time commitment annually: Board meetings (15 hours) + Member’s Meetings (21 hours) + other Board activities (approx. 5 hours) for a total of 41 hours. Time commitment monthly: Approximately 3.5 hours per month (on average)
COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR: Duties and Responsibilities
Composes and distributes monthly newsletter to members using Mailchimp.
Designs any other marketing materials using Canva (or similar program).
Maintains and updates VMG website.
Prepares the Annual Report of Activities for the AGM.
Monitors the Communications email and responds appropriately.
Time commitment annually: Board meetings (15 hours) + Member’s Meetings (21 hours) + other Board activities (approx. 24 hours) for a total of 60 hours. Time commitment monthly: Approximately 5 hours per month (on average)
MEMBER AT LARGE: Duties and Responsibilities
Assist with choosing topics for Member’s Meetings
Assist with preparation for meetings (pick up snacks, etc.)
Note: We are a small Board, and as such, all members contribute to the general running of VMG, and planning of Member’s Meetings.
Time commitment annually: Board meetings (15 hours) + Member’s Meetings (21 hours) + other Board activities (approx. 2 hours) for a total of 39 hours. Time commitment monthly: Approximately 3.25 hours per month (on average)
